'Voices From The Past' Vol. 1 — May 2

Since God is eternal and he is our covenant God, we have an eternal possession. We shall traverse the world a while, and then arrive at the blessings of the everlasting hills (Gen. 49:26). If a man's life is blessed by an abundance of goods so that his life is comfortable for a short time, how much more may the soul be swallowed up with joy in the enjoyment of the Creator whose years never fail? He can keep us in life, and he lives forever to be enjoyed. Though death will seize us by God's irreversible order, the immortal Creator will make even death a victory when he lands us in glorious immortality. There, we shall enjoy a boundless eternity by the grace of a sovereign and eternal God. It is impossible that the believer, who is united to the immortal God, will ever perish, for God is from everlasting to everlasting. He is an ever-flowing fountain of life. This is the comfort of the church. After we retire from the world, we shall live forever with God, without any change by the multitude of years and ages that run forever. God has neither beginning nor end, and that is our God. Truly we may say, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years.' Mortality is swallowed up in immortality. Rivers of pleasure are for evermore. Death is a word never heard by any; it is forever put out, as one of Christ's conquered enemies. Happiness depends upon the presence of God, with whom believers shall be forever present. Happiness cannot perish as long as God lives; he is the First and the Last: the first of all delights, nothing before him; the last of all pleasures, nothing beyond him; a paradise of delights at every point, without a flaming sword. The enjoyment of God will be as fresh and glorious after many ages as it was at first. There will be no decay, he is an everlasting portion.
