Give me life in your ways.—Psalm 119:37

There are three kinds of spiritual sloth. (1.) Resolving sloth: some have determined to remain unconcerned about their eternal salvation. They never stir from their bed of security, come life or death. (2.) Delaying sloth: others intend to look after their soul, but not quite yet. They seek just a little more time. The sluggard begs for a short nap more, and then he will rise. O how dangerous is delaying sloth! It was asked Alexander how he came to conquer the world, and he said; ‘I never wilfully postpone to a future time anything which ought now to be done.' (3.) Disturbing sloth: when a person endeavours to walk in God's ways, but sloth like rust hinders his wheels from running. The saint's soul should drive like Jehu's chariot, heartily and furiously (2 Kings 9:20). All the agility of the soul is required in God's ways. The soul needs to stretch to the highest peg. It needs an insatiable desire to accomplish God's work. It needs a constant waiting and working until the duty is perfected. Archimedes was drawing his mathematical lines when Marcellus entered the gates of Syracuse. When the soldiers entered his study, he paid them no attention. When they pulled him by the sleeve, he cried out, ‘Let me alone to finish my work.' When the soldiers drew their swords to run him through, he yet plied his business. We too must fly upon the wings of the wind, fervent in spirit, boiling hot, serving the Lord; continuing instant in prayer, strenuously and steadfastly wrestling with God, as Jacob did, who as a prince had power with God. This is pleasing with God. He counts it real prayer. The rooster is a rare emblem of this activity; he raises himself, flaps his wings, and then crows with all his might. Do not run slowly in God's way, serve him with industry and endeavour.
